Thus we are planning few sports events. For the first event to take place in IEEE WEEK 2010 (http://ieeenuces.org/ieeeweek.html) at FAST-NU and LUMS, we want to form a cricket team to play a match with the Student Branches 11. We'll appreciate if GOLD Members can take out few hours from their busy schedule for this excellent networking opportunity and mentoring current students. Please sign up at the following link and email goldlhr [a] ieee [dot] org in case of any queries and feedbacks .
The idea was to bring together all the student branches of Lahore Section and breathe a new life into student activities here. Over the previous year’s IEEE-NUCES has been the most active student branch. Now IEEE-GCUF has taken up that mantle but our commitment to helping the student’s remains firm. We got our inspiration from the GINI project of which our Chairperson, Mr. Ata Ullah Khan is the Lahore Section coordinator.

The first meeting was held in NUCES Lahore on the 1st of November, 2008. It was a huge success with participation and enthusiasm greater than expected. Under the calm guidance of Dr. Zaeem Jaffri (Student Activities Chair of Lahore Section) we have been able to revive some old branches and mobilize some stagnant branches. The 2nd meeting in this regard was held on 1st December, 2008 in UET Lahore. This was another milestone achieved in our effort because this marked the revival of IEEE-UET which had disappeared into oblivion after its glory days of the early 90’s when it was the largest branch in the whole of Asia and the 7th largest branch in the world. We hope that IEEE-UET will be able to scale similar heights again in the near future.

The meeting was preceded by an IEEE orientation in UET that was given by me. The presentation was well received by around 30 to 40 people. I was later told that they were all interested in joining IEEE and my presentation was meant as the final push. The general opinion was that I was able to get my point across convincingly enough. This presentation is part of a sequence of presentations that we hope to give across different student branches of Lahore Section to raise awareness about IEEE and its benefits. The next presentation was supposed to be held at UMT on the 31st of December, 2008. It has been postponed due to some unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, at the moment, the next presentation will be in GCU Lahore on 3rd January 2009.

However, the next meeting of Lahore Section student branches will go on as planned at UMT on the 31st of December, 2008. The meetings in themselves have been lively events where students and branch exe members have come forward with their problems and we have tried to put our heads together and come up with solutions. During all this the guidance of Dr. Zaeem Jaffri has been invaluable. He has gently pushed us in the right directions. Unfortunately, the meetings have so far been unable to inspire the kind of activity that we were hoping for. That is not to say that there has been no activity at all. The branches have been mobilized and the IEEE orientation presentations I talked about earlier have been arranged nearly everywhere.

My hope is that by bringing together all the branches of IEEE Lahore Section we can help each other out in organizing bigger and better events for all the IEEE members of Lahore Section. IEEE-NUCES is very proud of its history and we hope to remain one of the leading IEEE student branches of Lahore section. The minutes of the two meeting I mentioned will be posted separately on this blog.

Dr. Zaeem has been encouraging us to post our activity reports as well as detailed plans on the blog. So far this request has been ignored by everyone including me. I hope to rectify this very soon with details of the IEEE-WEEK that is planned from the 4th of February to the 7th of February 2009. I will be looking forward to active participation of all the branches of Lahore Section to make this event a huge success.

Adios

Abdul Wasay Mughal

Vice Chairperson, IEEE-NUCES Lahore

Abdulhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04688187329742958704noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439315767950039824.post-47097814335714270162008-11-23T17:24:00.005+05:002008-11-23T17:31:12.618+05:00IEEE CIIT Lahore Quiz Competition on C/C++IEEE CIIT Lahore will be conducting a quiz competition on the concepts of C / C++ on 4th December, 2008.

Download Registration Form (PDF Format) (DOC Format)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439315767950039824.post-90210681316595632892008-11-23T17:08:00.003+05:002008-11-23T17:32:21.322+05:00Distributed Video Coding Tutorial by Mr. Shahid Ayub arranged by IEEE-CIIT Lahore on Nov. 13, 2008Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439315767950039824.post-77955175276845578872008-11-23T16:51:00.006+05:002008-11-23T17:08:06.487+05:001st IEEE Electronics Olympiad [GIKI 31st Jan - 1st Feb, 2009]Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439315767950039824.post-47348589290463270832008-11-16T05:30:00.004+05:002008-11-16T06:37:21.362+05:00IEEE LAHORE GOLD Activities 2008-09

The IEEE GOLD aims to satisfy the interest of a young professional who are finally discovering that there is life after engineering school!

GOLD Lahore organizes events that may be of interest to someone who is building a career and a financial portfolio. The short courses were namely, Web Development and Java Online Application Development. The first was taught by Irfan Ahmed of batch 2002, who has been the webmaster of nearly all societies at NUCES-FAST, while the later was taught by M. Hassan Khan of 99-2 batch, who has been a research assistant in LUMS.

Both the courses saw a healthy turnout of about 20 students each. Like every year, students who took the web development course, later turned into webmasters of various societies, hence IEEE-NUCES acts as a supplier of webmasters to the campus.

Membership drive Summer ‘04:

Summer is the right time to tap into the half-year memberships at NUCES campus. This year very proudly, IEEE-NUCES crossed the psychological mark of 100 student members for the first time in its 3-year history, during the summer membership drive. Around 40 new student members were inducted into the IEEE-NUCES student branch.

IEEE R 10 Student Congress 2004:

July also saw the chairman of IEEE-NUCES, Nauman Saeed Anwar, being selected for the Region 10 Student Congress in Hong Kong from July 13 to July 17. The chairman’s visit to Hong Kong saw the new opening of horizons for the IEEE student branch. After the visit, a healthy relationship between the student branches of India and Pakistan was observed, which was a joint effort of IEEE-NUCES, IEEE-LUMS and similar student branches from India.

Orientation 2004:

Orientation of IEEE-NUCES for the new batch was carried out during the first week of September. Before that, IEEE-NUCES also attracted attention on the first day of the new students by putting up a society stall. The orientation was an all out success, which was attended by more than 150 students.

IEEE-WEEK 2004:

The 3rd IEEE-WEEK was scheduled to be held from October 18 to 22, 2004. This years IEEE-WEEK was the largest since its inception. Around 20 universities and colleges participated in this grand event. Apart from the normal student competitions like the speed programming competition and the quiz competition, this year’s IEEE-WEEK also saw the following first timers:

a. The first ever video conferencing session was held between NUCES Lahore campus and the technical HQ of TRG in Washington DC USA.
b. A new concept of Circuit designing contest, On-Spot circuit designing competition on Pspice was launched this year, which was not only appreciated internally, but even universities in Karachi queried IEEE-NUCES about how to hold such similar event at their respective campuses.
The aim of this competition was also to provide a platform for the Telecom and Computer Engineering students, who previously had no similar place to show their skills and compete with other universities.
c. IEEE-LUMS collaborated with IEEE-NUCES and held the Business Idea Competition at LUMS campus successfully.
d. First time ever broadcast of IEEE events on World Call Lahore wide channel was also successfully carried out for this week.

Seminar on Wireless Networks:

A seminar on Wireless Networks was organized in September, which was delivered by Dr Zartash Uzmi, CS department LUMS. He covered the basic concepts, along with the research work being carried out under his leadership on wireless networks.

INMIC 2004:

After the success of IEEE-WEEK 2004, the student branch shifted all its attention to INMIC 2004 (International MultiTopic Conference 2004). NUCES campus in collaboration with IEEE-Lahore section and IEEE-NUCES arranged the largest ever INMIC since the last 7 similar conferences of this annual event.

IEEE-NUCES student branch helped the INMIC Committee on the following major issues:

a. Composing
b. Invitations
c. Call for Papers
d. Designing
e. Website
f. Reception
g. Information Booths
h. Hall Management
i. General Arrangements

More than 80 students helped the university in successful holding of this international magnitude.

Short Courses Winter ‘04:

Similar to its summer courses, winter short courses are also offered by IEEE-NUCES during the winter holidays. This year IEEE-NUCES stood out among all societies and promoted the telecom and engineering students. A special crash course for the students of basic electrical engineering was successfully taught by M. Arsalan of batch 2002, who, apart from being 2nd in his batch, is also a teaching assistant for similar courses.

A course on ASP and Object oriented environment were also held, from which around 80 students in all benefited.

Membership drive Winter ‘04:

Around 40 new student members, along with renewal of previous members was carried out during the 2 month long membership drive. This year, just like last year, the membership count is expected to cross 100 by the summers.

SOFTEC 2005:

It was the endless efforts of the SOFTEC team along with the unprecedented support of the executive body of IEEE-NUCES that 41 Indian delegates participated in this year’s International SOFTEC.

Elections 2005:

Elections for the new executive committees of IEEE-NUCES were held in April 2005. The new team can be viewed on www.ieeenuces.org.

www.lhr.nu.edu.pk:

Similar to the local campus website of Karachi campus, www.khi.nu.edu.pk, IEEE-NUCES is currently developing the basic website of www.lhr.nu.edu.pk for the local campus student services of Lahore campus. It is scheduled to be launched in Fall 2005, subject to approval from the administration.

Mentoring IEEE-NUCES Karachi Campus:

IEEE-NUCES Lahore campus is also serving as a mentor for IEEE-NUCES Karachi campus. With the kind leadership and help of IEEE-NUCES Lahore campus, the Karachi counterpart held their first ever seminar and workshop in late 2004.

Currently the Lahore branch is providing its help and services for the arrangements of INMIC 2005 at Karachi Campus.

Annual Dinner + Certifcate distribution ceremony INMIC ’04:

Annual dinner of IEEE-NUCES along with certificate distribution ceremony of student volunteers of INMIC 04 was carried out in April 2005. A special keynote speech on CMM levels and NETSOL were organized on this event as well. A representative of CMM gave the CMM keynote speech from Singapore, while Chief Operating Officer of NetSol, Sajjad Kirmani, did the NetSol experience. Both the events were a highly attended affair.

IEEE Confluence 05, India:

IEEE-NUCES executive committee along with 4 elite members will be visiting India at the end of June 2005. This trip will mark the first ever visit by NUCES students to India and possibly open a barrage of student exchanges between the two countries.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439315767950039824.post-18028807207198812322008-11-02T00:16:00.006+05:002008-11-02T14:35:21.892+05:00IEEE-NUCES Women In Engineering's trip to Women Expo

WIE Affinity Group at NUCES Lahore organized a trip for female students to “Women Expo” at Fortress Exhibition Complex, Lahore, on Saturday, 9th September 2006. The three-day exhibition was organized by the 4th Dimension Pvt Ltd in collaboration with the department of women development, Punjab, German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) along with several other government and non-governmental organizations.

The Motto of this Expo was "Lets Celebrate being Women".

Women entrepreneurs had been given stalls on highly discounted rates so that they could easily exhibit their products and services for the women’s expo visitors.
Around 40 girls were accompanied by Ms. Faiza Asghar Dar. The trip kicked off by many sighs of relief from the workload and excitement for the journey.

As one entered the Expo, stalls of various kinds were on display. The first stalls we saw were that of the different kinds of Tea ranging from Danedar, Tapal to Lipton and A1. The aroma of fresh tea was a welcome delight for tea lovers. Though no coffee lovers were given a chance to tantalize their taste buds.

Stalls of bags, jewelry, cosmetics and clothes brought out shrieks of delight and glee. Brands of cosmetics that had their collection on display were of Atiqa Odho, Christine etc. Some of the girls even experimented with the offer of free makeup application. The results of this free application - well, let’s just say natural beauty won in the end.

An Outstanding Women’s Lounge was also created at Women’s Expo where prominent women from all walks of life spared some time out of their busy schedules serving as a source of motivation and role models for the gathered women audience.

Fair and Lovely, Nikhaar, Swiss Naturals, Breeze Traders and Beautiful Beings had their creams, scrubs, cleansers and lotions on display with free sachets being given out to everybody who visited their stalls and free facial massages. One would have availed the opportunity if only masseurs would have practiced a little hygiene, but that’s only for the cleanliness freaks, as however one did see girls and women having free massages.

The highlight of the evening was the auditions for the TALENT HUNT 2006 that was being held by GEO TV. Bouts of laughter erupted in the audience when decent looking people tried their hand at acting. Their serious endeavors were a waste of time and energy. Hooting, ridicule, remarks and shouts of ‘Have mercy on us’ were the norm of every audition. But alas no one was barred from the torture by the volunteers.

One striking display of à la mode and chic jewelry was that on the ATTITUDE stall. They had unique bracelets, earrings, necklaces and different kinds of accessories which guaranteed your worth of money. Other jewelry stalls included Shoaib Jewelers etc.

An eye opener was the stall of Pakistan’s first fully qualified and U.K trained female plastic and cosmetic surgeon. They had the whole process of the surgery being live telecasted on the TV. Even if somebody had any plans to have a nose job or eyebrow uplift they had second thoughts after watching the clips.

Clothes of Riffat Khalid and Humaira Alvi were on display. style="">
I started working in IEEE-NUCES as a volunteer in the Web Site Documentation team, led by Aqeel Saifi and Sana Gul in 2001. At that time, IEEE-NUCES was in disarray; it was not registered as a Student Branch with IEEE, it had no by-laws, it was not even recognized by IEEE Lahore Section. No one in the campus knew, what it was, why it was, what it wants to do and most importantly how it will do. Earlier, IEEE-NUCES had arranged a conference named FISC (FAST IEEE Student Conference) in 1998 in which Agha Adeel played a vital role but after the conference the society pretty much vanished.

Another set-back happened to IEEE-NUCES in 2001, then Chairman Mr. Ali Hasham left the university and shifted abroad. Mr. Aqeel Saifi then was nominated as the new Chairman. I should mention another name of Mr. Yasir Qureshi (Batch 99-1) who was the Chairman of IEEE-NUCES before Mr. Ali Hasham. By the time, Aqeel took over as the IEEE-NUCES branch; the branch was effectively inexistent.

Mr. Aqeel Saifi made an entirely new team which was relatively junior but they had the zeal to take IEEE-NUCES further and establish it not only as a Student Branch but also as a reputable society of the campus. The By-Laws of the society were drafted and submitted to IEEE Lahore Section and IEEE head office for reviewing. The process took around 2 months and the By-Laws were approved after certain amendments by the IEEE Lahore Section and IEEE Head Office. As per the By-Laws, a new executive committee was made which comprised of Chairman, Vice Chairman, General Secretary and Treasurer. IEEE-NUCES opened its bank account and then all the legal formalities were completed and IEEE-NUCES was a Student Branch registered with IEEE.

The Student Branch IEEE-NUCES started arranging formal events from its platform. Seminars on Emerging Market Trends in IT Industry and Entrepreneurship were organized which were pretty well appreciated and IEEE-NUCES started to establish itself among many different societies of FAST and other IEEE Student Branches in Pakistan.

In the second-half of 2002, IEEE-WEEK was organized at Lahore level which was a big success. The IEEE-NUCES was established and recognized all across after the IEEE-WEEK 2002. The IEEE-WEEK was brainchild of Mr. Aqeel Saifi which later on became an annual tradition of IEEE-NUCES.

Along the way, IEEE-NUCES arranged numerous short-courses for the students of NUCES. IEEE members were given major rebates in the course fees and the courses were even attended by NUCES Peshawar Campus students.

In 2003, IEEE-NUCES organized its first All-Pakistan event. IEEE-WEEK 2003 became a national event and was attended by various universities spread across multiple geographical locations in Pakistan.

In 2004, IEEE-NUCES organized INMIC which was an immense success. The event attracted a very high number of participants and the qualities of papers presented in the conference were appreciated by all the participants.

It would be very rude of me, if I don’t mention the names of the individuals who have contributed a great deal in establishing IEEE-NUCES. Some important persons are:

1. Agha Adeel (Batch 1998)
2. Aqeel Saifi (Batch 99-2) Chairman, IEEE-NUCES 2002
3. Waqas Zafar (Batch 2000) Vice Chairman, IEEE-NUCES 2002
4. Ahmad Nawaz (Batch 2000) Chairman, IEEE-NUCES 2003
5. Nauman Saeed (Batch 2001) Chairman, IEEE-NUCES 2004

Few volunteers who contributed a great deal were:

• Asim Ijaz, Sana Gul, Waqas Khan (Batch 99-2)
• Jareer Ahsan, Bushra Naseem (Batch 2000)
• Zunaira Malik, Sheraz Arshad (Batch 2001)
• Ehsan Saqib, Aizah Ashraf, Fawad Ahmad (Batch 2002)

All these persons have enjoyed different offices in IEEE-NUCES during different times.

Few other persons who should also get an appreciation are:

1. Dr. Amjad Hussain, NUCES-FAST IEEE-NUCES Branch Counselor and Faculty Advisor
2. Dr. Arshad Hussain, NUCES-FAST IEEE-NUCES Faculty Advisor
3. Dr. Fakhar Lodhi IEEE-NUCES Faculty Advisor
4. Mr. Nadeem Akhtar, LUMS
